Independent Learner Guide for
NASA's Dawn Discovery Mission
Education and Public Outreach
Welcome to the Dawn Discovery Mission
Learner Guide
This guide has been designed to help you, as an independent learner, learn more about the NASA Dawn Discovery Mission as you to pursue your individual interests in the mission, its goal and its history.
Goal of the Dawn Discovery Mission
The goal of the Dawn Discovery Mission is to learn more about more about the origin and evolution of the solar system. To do this, the Dawn spacecraft will explore Ceres and Vesta, two of the largest, most diverse asteroids in the main asteroid belt, to obtain some detailed information about the role that their size and the presence or absence of water played in their evolution. Since these asteroids are thought to have remained intact since the earliest time of solar system formation, scientists think their surface features can give us a picture of the conditions present in the solar system’s first ten million years ago.
Materials Included for Your Exploration
The information and exploration materials in this Dawn Discovery Mission Module include the following major Strands:
- History of Asteroid Discovery;
- History of Asteroids: Origins and Evolution (including information about meteorites);
- History of the Dawn Mission Technology/Instrumentation; and,
- History of the Dawn Mission and Its Scientists.
